German designer Joachim Nees and JORI launched their new ´Daydreamer´ recliner at the Salone del Mobile in 2019. A surprisingly innovative design recliner. A brief look back with the designer at how it all began.

Joachim Nees
What's your background? And how would you characterise your vision of design?

Initially I was heading for an engineering degree, but then I discovered the power of design at an exhibition; it was such a revelatory experience that I changed course entirely and began studying industrial design. My design studio is established in Schöllkrippen, Germany. That’s where I develop all my ideas and products.
My personal vision of design? For me, ultimately the form always has to adapt itself to the human being and his or her ergonomics. And also to the proper functioning of the furniture. So: Form Follows FunctionIn the case of the Daydreamer reclining chair, this means that JORI´s patented ‘mono-move’ technology, ergonomics and comfort requirements nevertheless had some influence on the final look and design. The end result isn’t just a chair that looks innovative, but one that is also luxuriantly comfortable.

What exactly does the name ´daydreamer´ mean for you?

This name was actually something JORI came up with, and I also think it’s extremely apt.
The name has to clarify and illustrate the function, the purpose, of such a relaxing chair: to be able to pleasantly dream the time away on a personal island of relaxation, in a cocoon of well-being. Thus it is with this image in mind that I opted for a gentle aesthetics with organic and contemporary lines.

Are you already thinking about the end user when you design a product?

At first I actually only have rough notions about what I’d like to do, without specifically reflecting on the end user already. But when working with a brand like JORI, which has a loyal public with clear expectations, naturally you always have to keep the objective in mind.

You attach tremendous importance to the proper choice of material. How did you choose this for Daydreamer?

For me it was important to create a certain contrast between the material on the outside and that on the inside. A smooth, even outside was a must for me, since that introduces the necessary austerity in the interior. The inside may be somewhat more exciting, softer and warmer. So I very deliberately chose a stylish leather/fabric combination. The big challenge was creating perfect seams along the transition between the two materials - that certainly wasn't self-evident on such an organic form.

The Daydreamer reclining chair was crowned as winner of the 'German Design Awards' in the furniture category, as well as being named best of the best at the 'Iconic Interior Awards'. How do you regard this sort of recognition?

Firstly, I wanted to design a recliner model that brought a truly innovative design onto the market. In order to arrive at this combination of absolute comfort and sharp, innovative design, I always worked together very closely with JORI’s own R&D team. So I see these distinctions primarily as a reward for our teamwork, not so much to be ascribed to me personall

For you, what were the greatest advantages of the collaboration with JORI?

What really stands out for me is my appreciation for the incredibly high quality of their products and their infectious team spirit.

Daydreamer regularly appeared in the international Interior & Lifestyle press over the last year.
